Technical Writing with LaTEX

LaTEX (pronounced lay-tek) is a document preparation system for producing professional-looking or high-tech documents in a very stylish way. It is a freely downloadable software tool. This training introduces the general typesetting procedures using LaTEX for the main document classes encountered in academia and other offices, like papers, reports, theses, books and presentation slides.

Topics to be covered include:
• Document classes
• Document Structures
• Typesetting text, tables, figures and equations
• Bibliography management
• Beamers (presentation slides)
• Hands on practice – preparation of sample journal paper and report.


Upon the completion of this training, participants will be able to:
• Understand the general format of LaTEX document
• Develop different document classes – paper, article, report, theses, beamer
• Handle tables, figures, mathematical equations
• Use different bibliography styles.


During the training, the instructor presents topics and activities in a logical sequence allowing participants to demonstrate their experience, knowledge and skills. The training sessions will be participatory and engaging training sessions will be conducted. Training participants will be requested to work in groups on a specific topic and they will present these to the class. The training delivery activities include lectures, class exercises, group discussions, instructor-led example problem sets, lively discussions and producing documents using LaTEX editor which include at least, three document classes.
